Welcome to our new and ongoing business update from myself and our Curious Brewery team that we will be sharing going forwards via the blog/news feeds on our website.
Our amazing people have been working relentlessly since the start of the year on some really exciting projects for us all here at Curious, as we build the foundations for the months ahead, and for our contemporary new town centre brewery in Ashford, Kent.
With so much going on, it’s easy to forget to take the time to stop and reflect. So I wanted to grab a moment, grab a Brew (and invite you to do the same!!) and share some of the developments that are putting some breakthrough momentum into our business this year.
It’s 5 months now since I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to join this incredible business. There is so much passion in this business, for our product and our industry as a whole. It’s amazing to see that passion shared by our fans. It’s been great to meet so many of you at the Curious Dinners we have started to host at our Tenterden Winery.
So, what have we been up to?
Those of you who travel regularly through Ashford will have seen the black and red hoardings go up at the start of the year around the site of our new brewery. Behind the scenes, the detailed planning has been picking up speed, while we ‘break ground’ on the site.
Expect things to really start to take shape through May and June. We aim to finish the build by the end of the year, just in time for Christmas opening parties! I will share more with you in the coming weeks on the designs of the brewery itself.
We’re so excited about bringing the brewery to the town centre location of Ashford. An incredible location for public transport. We will be open for guided tours, and the brewery will feature a modern restaurant, bar and retail shop where you will be able to buy the freshest Curious beer, as well as a wider offering from our Chapel Down portfolio.
I cannot wait to invite you along to share more of our story over a beer at the UK’s newest beer cathedral.
We’re incredibly excited to announce that in the next few weeks you will be able to get your hands on super fresh Curious Brew in cans! Cans are 100% the best little vessels for your Nelson Sauvin dosed Curious Brew lager. But why?
– Cans keep out light, one of the main enemies of quality beer. When light strikes beer it alters the quality of the hop aromas in your beer that brewers work so hard to get in there. ‘Light-struck’ beer can smell and taste ‘skunky’ instead of fresh and delicious. Clear glass provides zero protection to your beer. Cans offer the best!
– Cans keep out oxygen, another villain in the battle for great quality beer. Cans seal freshness into your beer. Oxidised beer quickly loses the fresh bright aromas and flavours of hops, making your beer taste like damp cardboard. Cans keep oxygen out, and freshness in!
– Cans are lightweight and environmentally friendly. The aluminium we make our cans from is 100% infinitely recyclable. And the lightweight nature of this packaging makes it easier for on the go transport.
– Cans chill quickly! Cans chill in your fridge faster than glass bottles. Fact!
– Beer in cans tastes great!! Think of them as mini kegs. Beer from cans tastes as great as that from the taps in your local pub, as long as you store them cold and drink them fresh!!
To launch our new 330ml cans, we have partnered up with Tesco. This will be the first time you will have been able to buy our beer in the UK’s number 1 grocer, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring this new packaging format to our curious fans and available in 230 Tesco Extra stores from the start of April. We’ll be back in touch to let you know when they are available.
CURIOUSER & CURIOUSER
I’m personally so excited about this project. Curiouser & Curiouser is a unique series of small batch beers from the curious mind of Josh Donaghay-Spire, our head winemaker at Chapel Down, and some brilliant brewing and forward thinking partners from around the UK.
Chapter 1 is the first release in this collective, and is a collaboration with Somerset’s masters of flavour and fermentation, The Wild Beer Company.
We set out to brew a truly unique fusion of Gueuze-inspired sour ale that breathed the freshness and balance famous in our Bacchus and Chardonnay wines from Chapel Down. The end result is a wild fermented sour ale, barrel aged with Bacchus and Chardonnay wine yeast to create a complex beer that will confound expectations. The wild sour ale’s fresh acidity is balanced by the smooth characteristic of English wine to give intense aromas of citrus and toasted nuts with a hint of vanilla.
Watch this space for news of the release of this beer onto our online shop, as well as ‘Chapter 2’ which is lined up for brewing in April (ps. It’s going to be just as special!!)
At the start of April we will also be giving Curious its own new digital home, with the launch of curiousbrewery.com. The website development is well under way, and will be a portal going forwards where we can really bring our Curious story to life.
In our pursuit of excellence, we have to be endlessly curious and fearlessly optimistic. It is this attitude, that comes from our DNA as England’s leading winemaker, that is driving the team here at Curious to never take our eye off the goal of getting the best possible quality beer we can to our fans, new and old.
